Aboriginal Health
HealthWISE Aboriginal Health Services is committed to delivering culturally appropriate and holistic health care to Aboriginal communities in the New England North West and Darling Downs West Moreton regions. Our programs are designed to empower Aboriginal individuals through comprehensive health services, education, and support.
Some programs allow for self-referral, while others require a health professional’s referral or the completion of a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). Further details on eligibility and referral pathways can be found below.
Aboriginal Health Services
Indigenous Australians Health Programme (IAHP)
The HealthWISE team comprises of Aboriginal health practitioners, Aboriginal health workers, community support workers, and Aboriginal outreach workers. This multidisciplinary team offers a blend of primary healthcare services, clinics, and healthy lifestyle and education programs. Services are delivered in Tamworth, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Moree, and surrounding areas.
Integrated Team Care
This program involves care coordinators, Aboriginal health practitioners, and Aboriginal outreach workers. They provide coordinated care, outreach, and supplementary services across New England North West NSW. Services include medical appointment coordination, financial assistance for specialist visits, transport assistance, and linkage with other supportive organisations.
Primary Health Care
HealthWISE supports access to primary health care education and programs, including Indigenous fitness programs, healthy lifestyle initiatives, and transport assistance for attending primary health care programs.
Aboriginal Mental Health Services
The Indigenous Mental Health (IMH) team, consisting of care coordinators and peer support workers, provides clinical care coordination, peer support, and group therapy through culturally appropriate, holistic methods. Services are offered in Tablelands Cluster, Peel Cluster, Liverpool Plains, and surrounding areas.
First Nations Aftercare Program
This program offers person-centred, non-clinical care and practical support following a suicide attempt, connecting individuals with existing health, clinical, and community-based services. Services are available in Inverell and surrounding areas.
Wellbeing Groups
We also run a range of wellbeing groups for Aboriginal people as part of our Indigenous Mental Health program, including exercise groups, craft groups and healthy ageing. To find out if there is a group currently running in your area please contact the Aboriginal Health Team on 02 6766 1394.
Eligibility and Support Methods
Services are available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, with support provided face-to-face, by phone, and via Skype. Locations include Ipswich, Scenic Rim, Somerset, South Burnett, and Cherbourg Regions in QLD, and Bingara, Barraba, Inverell, Tenterfield, Tamworth, Glen Innes, Walcha, Liverpool Plains, and Armidale in NSW.

Referrals can be made through GPs or by contacting (02) 6766 1394.
For Mental Health Care Plans (MHCP), referrals can be facilitated by GPs or through self-referral if not currently on an MHCP.
