Creating a dementia friendly community

HealthWISE Senior Primary Health Nurse, Fiona Robertson, will be giving an informative presentation on dementia
on Thursday, 4 February at the Wee Waa Bowling Club from 9.30am-12.30pm

Wee Waa residents are invited to learn how they can make their town a safer, more welcoming place for people with dementia.

Every three seconds, someone in the world develops dementia. Dementia is a progressive and irreversible syndrome characterised by impaired memory, intellectual function, changes in personality and behaviour causing significant impairment of function.

HealthWISE senior primary health care nurse Fiona Robertson says the disorder is nothing to fear, and that the entire community can have a role in making life easier for those living with dementia.

Locals are invited to join Fiona, Claire Whyte from Community Connector Carers NSW and HealthWISE Lived Experience worker Donna Boughton at Wee Waa Bowling Club from 9.30am-12.30pm on Thursday, February 4 for an informative presentation on dementia, available carer support services and emotional self-care.

The focus is on helping locals understand dementia and teaching them how to help those with the disorder as they navigate their way through the community.

“I think people would be surprised how many people Australia-wide are getting diagnosed younger and younger,” Fiona said.
“It’s capacity building. It’s about getting people educated and involved in making their town dementia friendly,” she said of the talk.

Attendees don’t have to have dementia or even know someone with the condition in order to benefit from the free event.

By knowing how to help and understanding the challenges they face, you can make people living with dementia feel accepted and safe, Fiona said.

“It makes your community safer and it makes your community friendly,” she added.

Health checks and morning tea will be provided, and questions are encouraged. A relaxing, non-threatening atmosphere is promised for all.
