Social & Emotional Wellbeing

Deslee Matthews, HealthWISE Indigenous Mental Health Team Leader, runs a Social and Emotional Wellbeing group from our Tamworth office. Des and her group have some words of wisdom for us all about our social & emotional wellbeing.

‘Our health is a journey. It is forever changing and our social & emotional wellbeing is the track we need to stay on in order maintain good health overall.  Let me explain…’

‘Our health is holistic and for Aboriginal people it is our connection to land or ‘country’, culture, spirituality, ancestry, family and community, and it is all these things in our life which are important to us that make us feel well and keeps us strong.’

‘So have you ever heard the expression ‘it’s not what you know it’s who you know? …… Well, social wellbeing is the extent to which you feel a sense of belonging and social inclusion. A connected person is a supported person in society. Lifestyles, ways of living together, value systems, traditions and beliefs are all important to our social wellbeing and quality of life.’

‘Emotional health is the important part of our overall health. People who are emotionally healthy are aware of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. They are able to cope with life’s challenges. They can keep problems in perspective and bounce back from setbacks.’

‘So, in order to keep ourselves healthy we need to make sure we are good in all areas of our lives. Sometimes we veer off the track a little and sometimes a lot, and sometimes we just need a little support or guidance to get back on track.’

‘So my message is stay connected to what is important to you! And stay WELL!’

Here are some more messages from people in the yarning group and what keeps them well and strong…

The group agree.

‘A yarn a day keeps the Doctor away!’
